Following is a joint statement issued November 20, 2012 by the Embassy of the United States of America and the British High Commission in Sierra Leone.

Statement by EU High Representative C Ashton on the elections in S Leone.

theEUCatherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, made the following statement, following the elections in Sierra Leone on 17 November, 2012:
"I welcome the peaceful conduct of voting of 17 November in Sierra Leone which marks a further step in the consolidation of democracy in the country.

kelvin-soldering-story-top(CNN) - When Kelvin Doe, a then-13-year-old from Sierra Leone, saw that off-the-shelf batteries were too expensive for the inventions he was working on, he made his own at home. Kelvin did not have the privilege to do his project in a school environment. Rather, he was compelled to act by necessity and for the joy of solving practical problems. Kelvin combined acid, soda, and metal, dumped those ingredients in a tin cup, waited for the mixture to dry and wrapped tape around the cup to make his first battery. He failed several times before completing a final, working prototype. He hasn’t purchased a battery since.

Sierra Leone's Koroma moots higher mining revenues if reelected

leoneclub_ebkOct 18 (Reuters) - Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma said on Thursday he will boost tax revenues from the mining sector if he is elected to a second term in next month's elections, as part of a plan to combat poverty in the West African state.

Koroma will face off against opposition rival and former junta leader Julius Maada Bio in the Nov. 17 polls, seen as a barometer of progress in the country as it continues to rebuild from a civil war that ended a decade ago.

"I promised an agenda for change and I delivered it. Now I am here promising an agenda for prosperity and by god almighty I will deliver," Koroma told hundreds of supporters in the capital during the launch of his campaign platform.

Leone Stars coach Lars Olof Mattsson has reacted to his team failure to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals following their goalless draw with Tunisia Last Saturday.

The match was an AFCON final round second leg encounter played at the 10,000 capacity Moustapha Ben Jannet Stadium in Monastir and it finished goalless in favour of Tunisia who qualified on the away goals rule as the first leg in Freetown ended 2-2 in September.
